For the points addicts (and the soon-to-be indoctrinated), there is a very real justification that you feel when you make a purchase that earns you extra miles or credit card points.
Obviously, the credit card companies know this which is why you can get points for almost everything. Nonetheless, if you are able to pass the “Should I purchase this?” test before swiping that credit card, you MUST do a quick check to make sure you are not missing out on extra miles to be had by using a specific card in your wallet for eligible purchases.
And when it comes to traveling and booking vacations, all aspiring students of Points University must first master The Triple-Threat Trip – a vacation where you earn additional points and miles for EVERYTHING*.
At a minimum, a Triple-Threat Trip earns points in the three primary pillars of travel: Flights, Lodging and Transportation**.
At the end, we’ll see how to rake in the miles on eating and shopping too; but for now, let’s tackle the main three.
*Disclaimer: while this post is a good wireframe for all travelers, the programs and strategy listed below applies specifically to amassing gargantuan SkyMiles for Delta travelers.
**Fair Warning: you may experience severe FOMP (Fear of Missing Points) on every future trip you book that doesn’t earn extra miles on every part of the journey. Make sure you do not worsen its effects by not utilizing the essential, but lesser-known credit card benefits.
Now, this may be the most obvious category of travel, but you can never be too sure. So, here is a list of my personal favorite strategies you can take to make sure you earn additional miles and/or credit card points when you book your next flight:
- 5x AMEX Membership Rewards Points with the American Express Platinum (Personal) booking directly through the airline or via amextravel.com
- 3x Chase Ultimate Rewards with the Chase Sapphire Reserve card booking directly through the airline
- 2x Chase Ultimate Rewards with the Chase Sapphire Preferred card booking directly through the airline
- 2 SkyMiles per dollar spent with the American Express Delta Platinum and Delta Gold cards
While I am certainly a huge fan of scoring free hotel stays on points, Airbnb now boasts a sweet partnership with Delta to earn you miles while you stay at some of the most stunning rooms and homes on the planet. All you need to do is:
- Visit www.deltaairbnb.com/
- Select ‘BOOK YOUR AIRBNB’
- Enter your SkyMiles number
- Book any Airbnb to earn 1 SkyMile for every $1 spent on your stay!
One of the best advantages to the rise of ridesharing for travelers is the fact that you are now able to avoid those egregious airport daily parking fees during your trip. And it doesn’t stop there. Now you can not only save money, but you can earn SkyMiles each time you use Lyft not only on the way to and from the airport, but anytime and anywhere that Lyft operates!
All you have to do is the following:
- Visit www.deltalyft.com
- Follow the prompts to link your SkyMiles and Lyft accounts, then
- Earn 2 SkyMiles per $1 spent on Lyft Airport rides ***OR*** 1 SkyMile per $1 on all other Lyft rides in the U.S.
BONUS – Dining and Shopping
Dining – get SkyMiles for each time you grab a bite to eat or drink at nearby locations via skymilesdining.com.
(Note: you will need to create an account and register 1 or more credit cards that you must use to pay at a participating restaurant in order to receive the SkyMiles.)
Shopping – before buying that item in store while on vacation (or any other time you are buying something), make sure that you are not missing out on extra SkyMiles by ordering on www.skymilesshopping.com.
(Note: you will need to create an account and then select from any of the participating online sites to earn Bonus SkyMiles on every dollar spent.)
And there you have it – all of the ingredients for a successful Triple-Threat Trip.
